Marine and Navigation Technologies

The course provides extensive training on ship management, interaction of blue economy activities with the coastal line and related issues of pollution, coastal erosion and ecosystem impact and biodiversity loss.

Laboratory activities will be provided by the DIAm’s Marina-Capo Tirone Experimental Station. The course will include apprenticeships and internships at shipping companies, companies and public and private entities in the sector.

Basic educational activities: mathematics, physics, chemical technologies, computer science and logistics. Major  disciplines: geology, cartography, theory of ships, radars, sighting systems. Engineering topics in the context of coastal marine environment, of the port areas and of the ship as well as environmental issues will be explored through the technical-legal study of marine-environmental protection and sustainable systems of maritime transport.

Students participate in a call for application. Admission requirements are listed in the call for application:

  • early (March/May): recommended to secure a place; high school seniors may also participate, students are admitted through a selective test TOLC
  • standard (July/August)
  • postponed (September/October), if there are still places available

Course description

The course trains experienced technicians in coastal management, harbour areas and maritime transport shipping with the aim of developing techniques and toolst o monitor marine, port and navigation skills; technicians trained in this way can work in maritime and port working contexts, in rescue interventions at sea concerning drifting and shipwrecked boats and in environmental disasters due to pollutant spillage into the sea.  A high level of interaction between classroom theoretical contents and laboratory application tasks is guaranteed

Applicants with a five years high school diploma or equivalent foreign degrees are eligible.

Eligible candidates are interested in environment, marine ecosystems, sea-related Blue economies and navigation matters.

Providing solid skills to face Blue economy challenges, vessel and shipping management, harbours and port management to deal with marine and coastal line and related issues of water pollution, coastal erosion, impact on the marine ecosystem in terms of decreased biodiversity and more in general of environmental sustainability.

Technicians in charge of monitoring coastal marine environment, harbours and vessels (in public and private companies: Shipping, Logistics and Nautical Tourism Companies, Port System Authorities).

First-class officers for merchant marine and navy (for navigation safety and management of ports governance systems, harbour and logistics activities).

Fees, contributions and exemptions

Costs based on family income (ISEE-University) and including:

  • fee for equal access to university studies (from 130€ to 160€);
  • annual amount (from 0 (if ISEE-University <= € 22,000) to € 2,000);

Flat tax = €1,000 for international students (UE and non UE)

With a family income (ISEE-University < € 26,000) students are entitled to receive:

  • Scholarship consisting of total exemption from taxes, cash share, canteen and accommodation service (for off-site students)
  • Grants for international mobility
  • Reduced rates for the use of sports facilities and cultural services
  • Benefits for students completing their degrees within prescribed time

Exclusively on grounds of merit, students can obtain:

  • International mobility grants (Erasmus)
  • Free accommodation and canteen services published in the call DUnicAL career program for student-athletes.
